Sedentariness of College Students Is Negatively Associated with Perceived Neighborhood Greenness at Home, but Not at University

ID 75079
Abstract Previous studies reported contradictory evidence for associations between perceived greenness and obesity mediated by physical activity, focusing on people’s homes or general greenness. Data are lacking in other environments. We studied the association of perceived greenness at home and at university with BMI and physical activity. An online survey collected data from 601 participants, living and studying in and around the city of Graz, Austria; mean age of 24 years. Greenness was assessed using questions on quality of and access to green space; Body mass index (BMI) was derived from self-reported measures; physical activity and sedentariness were measured using the IPAQ questionnaire (short version). On average, BMI was 22.6 (SD = 3.7), physical activity was 63.3 (SD = 51.7) METh/week, and participants spent 5.8 (SD = 4.0) h/day sitting. Regression analyses revealed no associations between perceived greenness and BMI and physical activity for all environments, but a negative association for sedentariness and perceived greenness at home, but not at university. The results indicate a relation between perceived greenness and sedentariness, which differs for the home-and study environment.

Einen Gegenstand durchdenken

ID 75265
Abstract What does it mean to think a subject matter through? An attentive reading of a monograph can serve as a touchstone. The propositions of such a book, repetitions and redundancies aside, might either, first, be understood as each making a distinct contribution, constituting atoms, as it were, of truth. Or, secondly, they might be seen as links of a chain that interlock; the reader who goes along with it would have to carry an ever heavier weight. Thirdly, one might conceive of thinking a matter through as a journey where, at the same time, something is carried forward and something is left behind. All three accounts of the issue – atomistic, cumulative, processual – meet with criticism. Yet each of them contains an insight, too.

CardioScope: ECG sonification and auditory augmentation of heart sounds to support cardiac diagnostic and monitoring

ID 75347
Abstract CardioScope is a sonification/auditory augmentation tool intended to support cardiac diagnosis and monitoring. It allows users to record and visualize synchronized Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Phonocardiogram (PCG) signals, to sonify the electrical activity of the heart or to augment the sound produced by its mechanical behaviour. We propose an auditory augmentation method using amplitude modulation that allows users to accentuate specific segments of the heart sound in order to make pathological signals from the heart sound more salient.

Ritual Soundings: Women Performers and World Religions

ID 75197
Abstract This book documents ways in which women’s performance practices engage with and localize world religions while creating opportunities for women’s agency. This study draws on the rich resources of three disciplines: ethnomusicology, gendered studies of religion, and religious music studies. It is a meta - ethnography formed by comparisons between different ethnograp hic case studies. The book analyses women’s performances at religious events in cultural settings spread across the world to demonstrate the pivotal roles women can play in localizing the practice of world religions, exploring moments in which performance allows women the agency to move, however momentarily, beyond culturally determined boundaries while revealing patterns that suggest unsuspected similarities in widely divergent religious contexts. With the rise of religious fundamentalism and with world po litics embroiled in debate about women’s bodies and their comportment in public, ethnomusicologists and other scholars must address questions of religion, gender, and their intersection. By reading deep ly into, but also across, the ethnographic detail of m ultiple studies, this book reveals patterns of similarity between unrelated cultures. It invites ethnomusicologists back into comparative work, offering them encouragement to think across disciplinary boundaries and suggesting that they can actively work t o counter the divisive rhetoric of religious exceptionalism by revealing the many ways in which religions and cultures are similar to one another.

Rethinking Prejudice

ID 74012
Abstract Rethinking Prejudice offers the first philosophical monograph on the concept of prejudice. It takes its start from a study of Enlightenment thought, and pursues the topic to the reassessment of prejudice in contemporary hermeneutics. Yet history of ideas is a means rather than an end in this book. Dorschel analyzes the debates about prejudice from the 17th century onwards in order to shed light upon present concerns. Prejudice is not something peculiar to racists and similarly sinister figures, Dorschel argues; rather, it is an indispensable part of everyone's intellectual repertoire; if relevant phenomena are to be criticized, a genuine moral stance cannot be avoided. This book introduces and explores a topic of wide interest, particularly to those researching within the fields of philosophy, history of ideas, cultural studies, and social and political theory."
