“Gender in Performance Practices of Electronic Music"

In this lecture, I will elaborate on gender, performance and technology with regard to gender structure (“who does what”) and gender symbolism (gendered representations) and discuss the performativity of gender (Judith Butler) in relation to interdisciplinary musical performance. With various musical examples, I will show:

- both the persistence and the transgression of gendered conventional musical roles and of the disciplinary boundaries of music in electroacoustic performance/theatre works;

- gendered representations in electroacoustic performance/theatre works;

- how the seemingly neutrality of formalist and technological discourses on electronic/computer music may be considered as gendered.

Hannah Bosma defended her doctoral dissertation "The Electronic Cry: Voice and Gender in Electroacoustic Music" at the University of Amsterdam in December 2013. Her articles on gender and electroacoustic music are published in The Routledge Companion to Sounding Art (ed. by M. Cobussen, V. Meelberg and B. Truax; Routledge, 2017), Contemporary Music Review 35/1 (2016), Cathy Berberian: Pioneer of Contemporary Vocality (ed. by P. Karantonis, F. Placanica, A. Sivuoja, P. Verstraete; Ashgate, 2014), Sonic Mediations: Body, Sound, Technology (ed. C. Birdsall, A. Enns, 2008) i.a.
She was guest editor for the Organised Sound 8/1 issue on gender and music technology (2003). With film scholar Patricia Pisters she wrote the book Madonna: De vele gezichten van een popster (Prometheus, 1999). For a list of selected academic publications, see independent.academia.edu/HannahBosma

From 1998 to 2013, she worked as a specialist electroacoustic music (NEAR) at the Dutch music institute Donemus / Music Center the Netherlands. In 2014–2015, she worked as a researcher for a project on born digital heritage in film, photography, architecture and media art.  She organized the conference The Art of Voice Synthesis, May 11-13, 2016, at the University of Amsterdam (www.artificialvoice.nl). She writes and lectures internationally on gender, voice, electroacoustic music and preservation.
