Sound art and ethnography in the context of disability and technology

12. Juli  im IEM CUBE - 10:00 Uhr

In my presentation I’ll talk about two projects contributing to the field of art, design and disability. The first project, the Haptophone, is a collaborative sound art installation that creates an experience in which blind and sighted spectators can meet on equal grounds by mediating sculptures through the senses of touch and listening. This installation was developed together with Michael Ciarciello, a blind composer from Montreal. It premiered at the Blind Creation conference in London UK in June 2015.

The second project is an auto-ethnographic sound walk together with Piet Devos in Montreal. Together we explore the use of binaural microphones for blind ethnography and the benefit of joined listening sessions and conversations recorded and mixed with the sound scape. The approach is also participatory and is further informed by the concept of resonant design, which inspired us to develop the notion of a sonic boundary object.I will conclude my presentation with sound examples from other research creation projects from the field of sound design, spatial composition and auditory display.

Florian Grond (www.grond.at) is currently working on a FQRSC-funded research-creation postdoctoral project at the Input Devices and Music Interaction Laboratory (IDMIL) at McGill in collaboration with the Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT). He previously received a postdoc award by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Research in Greater Montreal (CRIR) for his research at Concordia University. He is also a collaborator at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology in Montreal. He holds an MSc (2002) from the Karl-Franzens University in Graz (Austria). From 2003 to 2007, he worked as a research associate and guest artist at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany). He studied at the Cognitive Interaction Technology, Center of Excellence (CITEC) and received a doctorate from Bielefeld University, Germany, in 2013. His artistic and academic work, published in various journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers and exhibited in venues across Japan, Europe and North America, focuses on the intersections between art, science and technology with a special interest in sound disability and assistive technology.
