Abstract In this thesis the design and implementation of a multichannel audio-system for reproduction of periphonic soundfields is discussed. After a specification of hardware components, a software implementation of a codec suitable for creation and recreation of threedimensional soundfields in live-environments has been written. Functions are provided to play back traditional multi-channel recordings via virtual loudspeakers, to decode pre-encoded ambisonic-soundfields and to render moving discrete sources into the audience in real-time. The presented system is both modular and scalable, to fulfill the needs of dedicated environments (IEM-Cube) as well as unforeseeable situations (temporary sound-installations, developing-environments, home-use) in a satisfactory way.
