Abstract Spherical microphone arrays enable a threedimensional sampling of spatial soundfields. The recorded data can be auralized with different spatial arrangements of loudspeakers or with binaural technology via headphones. The (spatial) quality of the playback directly depends on the microphone array configuration and the combination with an appropriate signal processing. For the design of spherical microphone arrays the aliasing frequency is a decisive parameter. But there are very different array configurations with mathematically the same aliasing frequency. To what extend these different arrangements cause hearable differences in an auralization, remains unclear. Within this master’s thesis the effect of the spatial sampling accuracy on the quality of the binaural auralization of the recordings is examined. A signal processing according to the state of the art is fundamental for this study. Therefore, different microphone array configurations with equal aliasing frequencies are taken into account. To exclude some practical sources of error, simulated microphone array recordings in a virtual room are considered in this investigation. The resulting array data are transferred to the spherical harmonics domain. From this representation binaural room impulse responses for the auralization are calculated. The auralized recordings of the different arrays will be compared in a listening experiment with regard to the overall quality, colouration and perceived externalization. As a reference a virtual head and torso simulator is placed in the same scene. Besides various array configurations, different sound source positions and source signals are considered. The goal of this investigation is to gain more detailed information about how an optimal microphone array could be designed.
