Abstract Rhythm is important not only in music theory, but also in linguistics. One distinctive feature for the description of a rhythm is its complexity. In the literature, there are some approaches based on perception tests or mathematical models which try to express these complexities within a xed scale. In this thesis, the best-performing measures for rhythm complexity are described. These measures can not generally be used for measuring rhythm complexity in speech, because they implicitely assume an underlying metric. In this thesis, a novel measure for rhythm complexity which is also applicable for speech is developed and compared to selected reference measurements. The algorithms are implemented with matlab..
