Simulation and Evaluation of a Compression/Decompression ADC Signal Path for Digital Silicon Microphones focusing on Audio Quality Aspects

Abstract To relieve ADC dynamic range and therefore be able to implement a more efficient design, an analog compression stage is introduced into the signal path of a digital silicon microphone. The pre-compressed and AD converted signal will then be passed to a decompression stage in the digital domain to optimally regenerate the original signal. The signal path including the compression, the ADC+NS and the required digital blocks for decompression should be simulated and evaluated. A special focus should be on optimizing and evaluating audio quality relevant aspects that might arise due to the specific design of this signal path. Audio quality relevant apsects might include transient switching artifacts, nonlinearity influences and more. The goal is to get a good understanding about the capabilities of the compression/decompression signal path concept, work out objective audio quality parameters that allow an efffective assessment of the needed performance for optimal design and ideally be able to come up with an improved concept regarding performance, efficiency and audio quality.
