Abstract | Music seems to touch human beings more immediately than any other art form; yet it can be an elaborate medium steeped in complex thought. The paradox of this “immediate medium” was pursued in nineteenth-century philosophy’s significant encounters with music. Giacomo Leopardi (1798–1837) addressed music’s immediacy through sound, suggesting that if music is a sonic bodily practice, sensualism is an adequate philosophy of listening. Søren Kierkegaard (1813–55) dismantled that recommendation, paving the way to account for the intellectual dimensions of music, including the key issue of its temporality. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) moved from considering psychological time to historical time: music creates meaning by absorbing the complementary elements of word and gesture over time. Of course, intriguing philosophies of music may not be all there is to the nineteenth century. Did music in that era acquire a capacity to articulate philosophical insight, as some have said? That argument is still open. |

Sonic Gendering of Ritual Spaces

Abstract | The sound of bells from churches and the adhan from mosques serve similar functions. They call their communities to gather. They remind their members to pray wherever they are. Punctuating the day at regular intervals, they confirm the continuing nature of the community and its quotidian activities, articulating the ways in which the two are mutually constitutive. Although their ubiquity renders them part of the background soundscape wherever they occur, the soundings of bells and adhan actually gender public spaces as male, if one stops to think about it. Whether the listener is aware or not, those sounds invoke memories of the activities of the men who serve as leaders in the religion, as well as the men whose lives are described in scriptures in words that were predominantly recorded by men. If the male gendering of public spaces described above is largely unmarked, when women are (over)heard performing in ritual contexts, their sounds disrupt the otherwise quotidian, (un)marked-as-male-gendered, soundscapes. A brief examination of one kind of culturally and historically distant sounded moment – funerals in mid-twentieth-century, rural Greece – in which women’s soundings temporarily gender the public soundscape as female, prepares the way for our main case-study in which we examine the soundscape of rowzeh – the commemorative mourning ritual performed by Shi’a women for Imam Ḥossein – in twenty-first-century Khorramshahr Iran. We argue that through their performances, women temporarily gender public, usually male-gendered, soundscapes as female. In temporarily gendering a public soundscape as female, however, much more than sound can be conveyed. Resistance, hidden potency, status, or demonstrations of wealth can also be heard in these sonic claimings of public spaces. |
