CUBE Lecture und Workshop - Komposition / Kollaboration / Technologie

In Kooperation mit dem Institut 1 Komposition, Musiktheorie, Musikgeschichte und Dirigieren

Orm Finnendahl

Biografie
Orm Finnendahl studierte Komposition und Musikwissenschaft bei Frank Michael Beyer, Gösta Neuwirth und Carl Dahlhaus in Berlin. Weiterführende Studien bei Helmut Lachenmann in Stuttgart. 1988/89 besuchte er das California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles.

CUBE Lecture - Farzaneh Nouri

Dienstag 30.1.2024 um 19:00

CUBE Lecture und Performance - Diegetic operands: Exploring aesthetics of non-representational data in machine improvisation

Farzaneh Nouri

Donnerstag, 18.1.2024, 10:45 Uhr

CUBE Lecture - Agaikum: Recording the Singing Dunes; Artistic Perspectives on Location Sound and Geophony

Benedikt Alphart & Luka Kozlovački

In Septmeber/October 2023 we undertook a Field Recording expedition aiming to record the rare phenomenon of Singing Dunes in Kazakhstan’s Altyn Emel National Park. Due to the lack of high-quality recordings of these geophonic sounds we decided to take the journey and produce these ourselves.
In our lecture we will not only present the recordings and go into detail about technical considerations in preparation and on site, but also focus on our artistic approach to recording and dealing with sound in the field.

CUBE Lecture - Marcus Schmickler

Montag, 15.1.2024, 18:00 Uhr

CUBE Lecture - Über Standards (in elektronischer Komposition)

Marcus Schmickler

CUBE Lecture - Marian Weger

Montag, 4.12.2023, 15:00 Uhr

CUBE Lecture - Für die Cocktailparty an Silvester: Gibt es akustisch transparenten Gehörschutz?

Marian Weger

Open CUBE - CUBE Lecture - Steve Williams

Freitag, 24.11.2023, Lecture 18:00 Uhr, Konzert 20:00

Open CUBE und CUBE Lecture : Sound, music, and sustainability; We are but dust and shadows

Steve Williams

Steve Williams aka drusnoise is a live, electronic music producer, techno performer, sound artist, and co-founder of Berlin Modular Society.

Steve Williams’ talk will investigate the intersection of sound, music, and sustainability. Sustainability questions are in the middle of every part of the music scene. Or at least they could be. This talk explores how we can make the music ecosystem more sustainable, how we as artists can tell a sustainability story, and – perhaps most importantly – how artists can help reimagine the world.

Following the talk, Williams will perform ‘We are but dust and shadows’ - a live experimental techno set as ‘drusnoise’ with analog and digital modular synthesizers, samplers, FX pedals, iPad granular synths, and analog drum machines. Additional sounds and modulations derive from public air pollution data, live sample and loop manipulation, field recordings, and scientific lectures.

Kristina Warren

CUBE Lecture - Composing Space

In this lecture, composer and sound artist Kristina Warren (1989, US) will discuss her practice of composing space. This occurs on several levels, firstly the direct level of spatial audio work, particularly high order ambisonic and multichannel-addressing methods, tailored here to the CUBE's unique, state-of-the-art system. Moreover, Warren also conceives of composing space through experimental temporal approaches such as re-imagining the rhythmic grid and notions of metrical accuracy therein; and through analog methods such as the gradual evolution of timbre and the phasing of event scheduling over time. By combining these various approaches to sonic space, Warren hopes to evoke a pleasantly spacious feeling for listeners. This lecture will describe both technical and poetic aspects of Warren’s artistic research practice of composing space.

Open CUBE -  Bending: An Evening of ASMR Drone Music in the CUBE

Bio:
Kristina Warren (1989, US) is a sound artist, composer, and instrument builder based on Wampanoag and Narragansett land also known as Providence [US]. Both in solo projects and in collaborative work including curating, Warren believes that collective listening is a precious and political act. Warren uses self-designed and received audio tools to create performances, installations, and recorded works, whose recent “ASMR drone” style uses quieter volumes and careful orchestrations to help audiences perceive their own listening. Called “precise and unpredictable” (Marc Masters, Bandcamp) and “a combination of the synthetic and the fuzzy with the deeply human” (Brian McCorkle, Jazz Right Now), work by Warren has been presented internationally at venues including Spektrum [DE], Studio Loos [NL], The Bluecoat [UK], Espace des arts sans frontières [FR], Espacios Sonoros [AR], Radiophrenia [UK], Musik Akademie Basel [CH], Experimental Sound Studio (Chicago, US), Rhizome (DC, US), and the MIT Spatial Sound Lab (Cambridge, US). Starting with an Artist Residency at Wiens MuseumsQuartier, Warren’s Spring 2023 EU tour also includes events in Graz, Den Haag, Stockholm, Berlin, and Reykjavik. Recently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Electronic Music & Multimedia (Brown University, 2017-21), Warren holds a PhD in Composition and Computer Technologies (University of Virginia, 2017) and a BA in Music Composition (Duke University, 2011).

CUBE Lecture: Streaaam - Ein vollautomatisierter, experimenteller Audiostreamingserver

Florian Hollerweger, Ass. Prof. Dr., Columbia College Chicago

3(100110011)=4(GRAZ)

James Dooley, Composer and Performer

>> Programme Note

Created during my 2022 artistic residency here at IEM, 3(100110011)=4(GRAZ) is a new musical work created with formuls, an interactive software environment for the composition and performance of synthesis-based electronic music. The new work examines the continuum between carefully crafted sounds and sonic artefacts produced by digital audio processing. Throughout the performance material is sequenced and generated that plays with foregrounding then backgrounding the digital audio processes, creating a sonic tapestry of finely tuned noise and chaotic tones.

The performance will be preceded by a short talk discussing the work and its creation.

CUBE Lecture - Peter Androsch

Mittwoch, 18.05.2022, 11:00 -13:00 Uhr

Was ist Schall?

CUBE Lecture - Craig Vear

Dienstag, 03.05.2022, 13:00 Uhr

CUBE Lecture - DigiScore
mit Craig Vear von der De Montfort University

Abstract
In this talk I will introduce and discuss my ERC Consolidator funded project The Digital Score: Investigating Technological Transformation of the Music Score (DigiScore). The opening section will position the digital score amongst a broader understanding of the function and purpose of all music scores: that of a communications interface between musicians. After defining that which signals a digital score as a different proposition, I outline the research aims and objectives of the DigiScore project. I will position this research among the core principles of flow, phenomenology, embodiment, and media affect, and outline the focus of the research as seeking meaning-making from inside the creative acts of digital score musicking (Small 1989). The final section will outline some of the current new insights, and present key questions that I would wish to discuss with those present in the room as way of allowing their voice into the development of this researchers and expanding the community of research in this area.

Bio
Prof Craig Vear is Research Professor at De Montfort University where he is a director of the Creative AI and Robotics Lab in the Institute of Creative Technologies. His research is naturally hybrid as he draws together the fields of music, digital performance, creative technologies, Artificial Intelligence, creativity, gaming, mixed reality and robotics. He has been engaged in practice-based research with emerging technologies for nearly three decades, and was editor for The Routledge International Handbook of Practice-Based Research, published in 2022. His recent monograph The Digital Score: creativity, musicianship and innovation, was published by Routledge in 2019, and he is Series Editor of Springer’s Cultural Computing Series. CUBE Lecture - James Dooley

Freitag, 8.04.2022, 10:00 - 11:30 Uhr

CUBE Lecture -  Exploring music interaction design with the formuls performance environment
mit  James Dooley, Artist in Residence

Abstract:
The touchscreen interface is an ubiquitous technology found in many devices such as iPhones and iPads. The gestures associated with these interfaces such as tapping, sliding and pinching have become second nature to us and can be harnessed in a musical context. These can be used as a way to allow musicians to control musical processes through physical gestures, much like playing a physical instrument such as a piano, and explore musical creativity without the hinderance of technical barriers.

In this lecture-recital I will present formuls, an ongoing music interaction design project based around a software environment for the composition, improvisation and performance of electronic music. The project explores how complex sound synthesis and audio processing parameters can be quickly and intuitively controlled using physical gestures through a touchscreen interface, enabling the performer to play the system as an instrument in a live setting without the need for presets. I will discuss the motivations behind the project, the design of the system, its affordances and limitations. Finally, I will demonstrate how the system is used in performance.
