Is emotion a construct of sex or motion?
Prejudices and socially determined norms often affect our (value) judgments - especially with respect to gender stereotypes. The communication of emotions shows of different forms, such as facial expressions and gestures. Based on these suppositions this paper explores sex-related communication through gesturally communicated emotions. Aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the (biological) sex of musicians on the perception of intensity of four emotion categories (fear, joy, sadness and anger). For this porpuse an experiment will be conducted with students only. A total of 9 different (silent) videos in 3 expression levels, each played 2 times each with male and female, and once with a neutral labelling. The videos are motion capture recordings of the upper body of pianists while playing, the sex is induced through a displayed name. The hypothesis that fear, joy, and sadness are attributed to a larger extent to women than men, and that for anger the reverse is the case, are based on sociological studies, and are linked to music-psychological and -sociological aspects in this paper.
